On the Summit

High above Lake Winnipesaukee, with 360 views of the New Hampshire Mountains and Mt Washington, BLOOM is busy designing a new home with passive house principles. With double wall framing, geothermal heating and cooling, passive solar design, and high-performance envelope, the house will both endure the harsh climate and use a minimum of energy.

The house is sited with the long axis on a south-facing slope, creating expansive western views to Winnipesaukee and stunning sunsets, while maximizing passive solar exposure to the terraced volumes that climb the hill.

The journey through the house starts at termination of the lower access road, and climbs, hugging grade, to the two-story bedroom /office suite near the summit. The frequent gale-force winds that buffet the site from the valley to the west are diverted by gently curved facades, and a roughly C-shaped floor plan.

The house volume wraps around the landscape on its eastern side,  forming a "calm patio."
